When determining the layout of a new law firm website or blog, marketers should consider the Golden Ratio, a mathematical ratio that Jarel Remick, a freelance designer, says, argues applies nicely to the layout of websites.
For those unfamiliar with the term, as explained by Wikipedia:
"two quantities are in the "golden ratio" if the ratio between the sum of those quantities and the larger one is the same as the ratio between the larger one and the smaller. Mathematically, the golden ratio is an irrational constant equal to approximately 1.618033988. At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio -- especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio -- believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing."
In his post, Remick walks readers through the standard layout of a webpage with a header, main content area, right sidebars, and footer, and shows how you can use the Golden Ratio (rounded up to 1.62) to determine an appropriate width for your main content area and sidebars that will be aesthetically pleasing given a predetermined width for your web page. He notes that it is easy for designers to size a layout using the Golden Ratio with grids.
